The Mercure Galant, founded in 1672 by Jean Donneau de Visé, was the first periodical to combine cultural articles with information. From the time of its foundation until the death of its founder, 488 volumes of about 500 pages were published, containing some 20,000 articles presenting various sections concerning public life with Official Relations or Entertainment and Festivities, private life with Births, Marriages and Obituaries, cultural life with the various Academies and Social Societies, personal works with Novels, Poetry or, in the Music chapter, Notated Airs with ca 575 musical plates.
