study on the history of Bremen's Market Square, as a document of inspiration for the architects who participated in the 1951 competition for the development of the ravaged market square after World War II.
The stock exchange was completely destroyed on 20 December 1943 during an Allied air raid during the Second World War. The ruins remained standing for a long time and were only demolished after the Chamber of Commerce sold the site to the city in 1957. Prior to this, in 1951/1952, the Chamber of Commerce had organised an ideas-competition for the development of the site, in which 128 architects took part. However, the ideas were not pursued any further.
