Maurice Kufferath (1852-1919) was a Belgian music critic, librettist, cellist and conductor. A director of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels from 1900 to 1919, he was considered an icon of the music scene in Belgium.
Guillaume Guidé (1859-1917) was involved in the avant-garde circles of the Cercle des XX (1884-1893) and La Libre Esthétique (1894-1914), founded in Brussels by Octave Maus (1856-1919), a Belgian art critic, writer, lawyer and a key figure in Brussels musical life at the time. During these sessions, Guillaume Guidé developed a passion for contemporary Belgian, French and Russian compositions. For his talent as a performer and concert organiser, Guillaume Guidé was offered the post of director of the Théâtre de la Monnaie with Maurice Kufferath in 1900. He held this position until the outbreak of the First World War, a period considered to be one of the most innovative in the institution's history.
