Johann Gottfried (after 1802 von) Herder (1744-1803) was a German philosopher, theologian, poet, and literary critic. He is associated with the Enlightenment, Sturm und Drang, and Weimar Classicism.
'Abhandlung über den Ursprung der Sprache' is an attempt by Herder to understand the origin of human language. In 1769, he submitted it to a competition at the Berlin Academy of Sciences, thereby taking part in a contemporary discussion.
