- This volume is based on a Viennese conference on the first decade of Pietro Metastasio's (1698-1782) artistic activity. It deals with the period when he was striving to assert himself as a "virtuoso di poesia", first in Napoleonic salons and finally in the opera houses of the musical centres of Naples, Rome and Venice. It was during this period that Metastasio developed his elegant and subtle poetics for the operatic stage - his appointment as poeta cesareo to the Viennese court (1730) greatly promoted the dissemination of his works in Europe.
