- Count Hermann Karl von Keyserling from the Keyserlingk family of Baltic German nobility based in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, was a Russian diplomat under Catharina the Great and patron of Johann Sebastian Bach. At the time of the letters he was active as Russian envoy in Dresden.
He reports here to "Ewr. Königliche Hoheit" (Your Royal Highness), "Herzogin, Gnädigste(r) Fürstin und Frau" (who is possibly Elisabeth Sophie von Brandenburg, Duchess of Courland (Kurland). 1674-1748), about his activities (correspondence, financial matters, etc.), and affirms 'My eagerness to place myself at the feet of Your Royal Highness is certainly great..." (Meine Begierde, mich Ewr. Königliche Hoheit zu Füssen zu legen, ist gewiss gross...).
Kurland/Courland is one of the historical and cultural regions in western Latvia. - Permalink:
